How to build a one-page exam sheet
The mistake is copying the chapter onto one page. Here is what earns a place on an exam sheet, what to leave off, and how to use it the night before.
Most "one-page summaries" are the chapter with the paragraphs removed. They are dense, they are complete, and they are useless the night before an exam, because you still have to read all of it.
A revision sheet is a set of decisions. These are the ones that matter.
One chapter per sheet
Not one subject, not one unit. One chapter. A sheet that covers three chapters is a booklet with a cramped font. Short sheets get reviewed; booklets get carried.
Build it after one self-test
Write the sheet after you have quizzed yourself once, not during the first read. By then you know which definitions you can produce and which ones dissolve under pressure. The sheet should record those gaps, not the whole chapter.
What earns a place
- Definitions in your own words, not the textbook's.
- Distinctions that exams test: mitosis versus meiosis, correlation versus causation, the two exceptions to the rule.
- Formulas with units and the conditions where they apply.
- Dates, names, and labels you cannot derive.
- One worked example, if the exam asks you to reproduce a method.
What to leave off
Background. Full sentences. Anything you can derive from something else on the page. If a line does not help you answer a question, it is decoration.
The final box
End with three to five lines under "if you remember nothing else". This is the part you read in the corridor. Keep it short enough to say out loud.
Tip
Cover each section and rewrite it from memory on a blank page. Whatever you cannot reproduce is what the sheet is missing.
Using it
Print it at 100% and keep it flat. Read the traps twice, then answer the boxed facts from memory. The morning of the exam, read the box and nothing else.
In Penwell, choose the Exam sheet style, upload the chapter or your class notes, and edit the traps it missed. Export to PDF for printing, and turn the boxed facts into flashcards for the walk to the exam.
The limit
The AI does not know what your lecturer emphasised in class. Add that yourself. A sheet you did not edit is a summary, not a revision tool. The editing is where the learning happens, even when it takes ten minutes.
